Good read
Good fantasy fiction
I loved this book. Such a wonderful little jaunt back into the magic of Bordertown. Much like the other Bordertown stories it really brings the magic to life and makes it feel real as you follow along with the main character and his life. This is a sequel, so make sure you grab the other book as well!

I am a hard sell, so the relatively low rating doesn't really imply any real criticism of this book. The characters are interesting and show some nice personal evolution, the world-building is solid, and the details are convincing. There are quite a few unraveled ends at the close that the author (and associates, such as his wife, Emma Bull) do address in later books. My main problems are that the strengths aren't quite strong enough, so that you're not sure of the massive amounts of unfinished business that remain at the end of the book are intentional or just the author's lack of focus. When the character does something you don't understand, is he complex or just unrealistic? Is a gap in the world-building going to be filled in later, or did the author just run out of steam? There is no tight story arc in subsequent books, so some of these questions are answered, but some aren't. I would recommend this book, especially for YA readers (and adults, like me, who enjoy well-written YA books), but it's not as compelling as it could be.
