The stories say The Old Ones built wonderful cities, flew through the air and could send messages across the globe in the time it takes for an arrow to find its target. Caylen's seen enough relics to believe at least some of that, but she doesn't regret living in her world instead of theirs. She's a nomad, making her home in the Wildlands between the islands of civilization in the fortified cities. Her world can be dangerous, but she can't imagine living any other way. When her band of nomads rescues a young nobleman from Yorkton, Caylen's mother wants to deliver him to the nearest waypost, collect her reward, and move on. But Caylen is intrigued by Logan, and worried that his predictions of trouble for the nomads may be accurate. In order to protect the Wildlands she loves, Caylen has to leave them behind. In the city, she's not sure if she can trust anyone, not even Logan. And the more she learns, the more she realizes that she's far from the only one in danger. Her enemy is powerful and ruthless, and the cruelty she sees makes Caylen dream of the simplicity of the Wildlands. But she can't walk away from the suffering, so she'll have to stay and fight. It's the nomad way.

Good, solid YA fantasy novel about a young woman who lives with a band of "nomads" -- people who live in the forests and are expert trackers and hunters -- being brought into one of the city-states that formed after civilization collapsed. The cities are ruled by warring noble families who pretend to be civilized while plotting to kill one another, and Caylen teams up with the head of one of these families, Logan, in an effort to uncover who attacked her band of nomads and Logan, while he was traveling through the forest. The characters were well-drawn and the story well-constructed. My one issue with the novel is pacing. There were several times when it seemed a bit slow, especially near the beginning. It wasn't exactly that things weren't happening -- there was the initial attack and other life-threatening events -- but I think it felt slow to me because Logan was unconscious through much of it, and the interaction between Caylen and Logan is what drew me into the story. Things picked up when they reached the first town and Caylen and Logan interacted more. This really wasn't very far into the novel, so I didn't consider this enough of a problem to knock it down a star.
I enjoyed the story immensely. This is book one of a series and I hope the author releases the next one soon!

Dark Houses Catherine Dale 9780987801487 Books Reviews
The book begins with a discovery of a body, leading to more bodies, until Caylen, a young member of the Nomads, finds Logan, an injured man who has survived despite the odds. The mystery surrounding who he is, as well as his connection to Caylen and her mother, Nora, adds intrigue. About a third of the way through the book I started to wonder - where are they going, what is their destination and are they ever going to get there? It wasn't clear yet what their goal was and why they were on guard all the time.
The second-third of the book take place in the town of Yorkton, where Logan is from, and Caylen quickly becomes swept up in the political posturing and plotting going on in town due to her heritage. Finally we learn about the Dark House, a place where the government tortures and imprisons citizens, basically according to whim. In my opinion this is where the book becomes interesting. I think the first part is important to set up the relationship between Caylen and Logan, as well as the mother/daughter relationship between Nora and Caylen, but I think there should have been more focus on the action in town.
Dark Houses is billed as YA but I didn't get a particularly YA feel from it - it seems like the politics in play would appeal more to adults than teens. Caylen and Logan's relationship is complicated, and could possibly blossom into romance, but there's an element of mistrust that makes them an interesting pair. The "fish out of water" element with Caylen coming into the town, not dressing or speaking like the townspeople, makes her stand out and also helps to further establish that she is not a typical young woman. I really like her character - she's strong, a good shot with a bow, not afraid to confront or ask tough questions, and also quite caring and wants to champion the underdog.
Overall I'd say this is an entertaining read. The strong female heroine is easy to rally behind, the plot moves along at a decent pace and the writing is nearly flawless. It's got kind of a medieval flavor to it, although it may be taking place in a post-societal world. Give it a shot if this sounds like it would be up your alley!

Well written and engaging, but rather predictable. I'll be looking for the next book in the series, as I would like to know what happens next.
This is listed as a YA novel, but the tone of the story was adult. The author never gives the ages of the main characters, so I'm still not sure how old they are. My guess is late teens, but I never got the idea they were young through their actions or dialog.
It was hard for me to get into this story. Although it begins with movement, not enough information about the world these people inhabit is given so I struggled, trying to understand who they are and what they're doing. The story moves slowly and there is a lot of narrative; I think young readers might find it difficult to enjoy.
This is a fish out of water tale. Caylen is a strong female lead, and it's through her eyes the story unfolds. There are heroes and villains and those in between, and there's also courage, loyalty, and even romance. The writing is competent and flows well. If you enjoy immersion in a brave new world, you will like Dark Houses.
